Resident urges Ault to consider uranium mining impacts Print

Ault resident Phil Tidwell only discovered a few weeks ago that proposed uranium mines in northern Colorado could be drilled only miles from his property. So Tuesday, he urged the town board to get involved in the issue.

Canada-based Powertech Uranium Corp. is planning to drill on 5,780 acres of land it bought last year. The company estimates 9.7 million pounds of uranium can be extracted on acres that range from Wellington to north of Nunn.

A residents' group called Coloradans Against Resource Destruction has held town meetings in northern Colorado to discuss the environmental, health and economic impacts of uranium mining. The next meeting is set for 6:30 p.m., Aug. 22 at the VFW, 100 1st St. in Ault.

Tidwell encouraged the town board members not only to attend the meeting, but also to consider taking a position on the issue. "I would like to know from the board: 'What are we going to do to protect our town?'" Tidwell said.

Tidwell said he is concerned about two of his own wells after reading information on the Web site

Powertech also held a town meeting in Nunn last month to assuage residents concerns about the project, which they said will not impact groundwater.

Ault mayor pro-tem Troy Osborne said the issue would be discussed at the next work session.
