Medical group joins mining foes |
|
By Monte Whaley The Denver Post November 28, 2007 Proposed uranium mining near Fort Collins is attracting more opposition, including federal and state lawmakers and the Colorado Medical Society. The group's board of directors unanimously agreed this month to support the Larimer County Medical Society in decrying the idea of a huge uranium operation about 10 miles east of the city. "We just felt it was a bad thing for the citizens of our county, given the contamination risks to our health," said Dr. Cory Carroll, a medical-society board member and president of the Larimer County Medical Society. The Colorado organization's stance did not surprise officials at Powertech Uranium Corp., the company that owns mineral rights in the area, said spokesman Pete Webb. Powertech is at least a year away from applying for the necessary permits needed before mining can begin, Webb said. Powertech says its operations will be safe and environmentally sound. But several lawmakers — including U.S. Rep. Marilyn Musgrave — have voiced opposition to the plan.
