Did you know that Weld County is Colorado’s leading producer of cattle, grain and sugar beets, and is the richest agricultural county in Colorado east of the Rocky Mountains? And do you know that ìin situî leach uranium mining, which extracts uranium through the ground water, is being proposed for more than 5,000 acres in Weld County?

Our old mining laws, still on the books from the 1870ís, do not give us adequate water quality protection from mining. Although the companies proposing to mine in Weld County tell us that the ground water will be reclaimed from toxic contaminates that will remain in the water after leach mining, why take the chance? HB 08-1161 and HB 08-1165 are two very important bills traveling through the State House, then on through the Senate, which will move towards giving us a guaranteed of water quality in Colorado, including Weld County.

Concerned? Go to and read: HB 08-1161, authorizing denial of mining permits based on uncertainty about reclaiming ground water and HB 08-1165, requiring the consideration of health and environmental risks in issuing mining permits? And contact your state representatives!
