Mining example in book Print

I had just finished reading the book "Nuclear Nebraska" when I read the opinion in the Coloradoan on the Powertech mining plan by Carolyn Bartlett on the possibilities of uranium mining near Nunn.

"Nuclear Nebraska" is about a small farming community that was singled out by government agencies, a large company and a few residents who did not care much or were unaware of the ramifications of putting a Low Level Radioactive Waste dump near the small town of Butte. Many farmers and businessmen from the town and county spent nearly 20 years, much of their savings and risked many of their family and business relationships to fight against the dump because of what it might do to their water and, therefore, to their cattle and crops.

The book is a disturbing chronicle of bureaucratic and governmental politics, misinformation and struggles of the people who would be most affected by the nuclear waste dump. Their long fight was actually won, but only because the need for this kind of nuclear waste dump had diminished and there were numerous lawsuits in progress because of the problems with the waste facilities already built.

Too often in our society, the small farmer or businessman or property owner gets literally run over by big business and money without regard for the long-term effects of their actions. I commend the people of Nunn for trying to fight something that could affect their community and the surrounding area for many years in the future.
